Stephen Doyle grabbed his first win of the Historic class season after an epic battle with Jackie Cochrane.

Cochrane held pole position following his victory in race one, with Doyle in second and David Kelly back in third.

Cochrane’s Tiger Sunbeam suffered massive wheel spin at the start, giving both Doyle and Kelly the chance to dive down the inside, leaving Cochrane back in third emerging from turn one.

Kelly managed to hold off the V8 Sunbeam long enough for Doyle to open up a commanding three second lead after lap two.

The powerful Sunbeam slashed the lead to just 1.6 seconds by lap four and the duel between Cochrane and Doyle began.

Further down the field, Pamela Cochrane in her MGB GT and Clive Brandon went head to head for sixth spot, with Pamela managing to holding off Brandon.

Dominic Peel’s, Davrian’s engine erupted mid-race, clouding the Mondello circuit in a haze of thick white smoke.

The ASK Racing team’s MG Midget driven by Matt Dunne took eight spot after a challenging battle with Tommy Doherty in the Ford Capri.

All of Doyle’s good work was almost destroyed on the penultimate lap, when after getting caught up in heavy traffic was forced to run wide, sending clouds of dust into the path of Cochrane but Doyle held his composure and first position.

Despite facing the V8 power of Cochrane’s Sunbeam, Doyle from Delgany in the 2000cc Lotus Elan gave a master class in defensive driving to reverse the result from the first championship race when he came second the Cochrane.
